Can Botox Help With Acne Scarring?

Acne scarring can be very psychologically traumatic for many people, leading to a loss of self-esteem and confidence. There are wide variety of treatments on the market — some creams, others involving laser and trips to the dermatologists. Many patients, seeing the firming effects of Botox from other treatments, also wonder if Botox can assist with reducing the appearance of acne scarring. The truth is that Botox cannot help with this.

Can Botox Help With Acne Scarring?

What Botox does is weaken the muscles that create the lines and wrinkles on your face. Acne scarring is a “static process,” involving the skin, and the collagen and fat underneath the skin, meaning that simply injecting Botox does nothing to combat this process. Botox, therefore, would neither worsen, nor improve the extent of your acne.

Acne is much deeper in the skin than Botox is able to penetrate and should generally not be considered a treatment for acne scars.

Most physicians and surgeons would recommend fillers and laser treatment as the best options for acne scar reduction because they work to actually decrease the appearance of scars and target the deeper layers of skin where the scarring has taken place. It is a good idea to speak to your dermatologist, surgeon or physician about possible scar remedies before going ahead with anything, as these treatments do come with some side effects you should be aware of, such as swelling and redness. But Botox as a scar reduction method does not have any scientific evidence to back it up.

Acne scarring can be emotionally painful and make you feel like you are not your real self. There are, however, a variety of treatment options out there that can help and provide long term results for your acne scarring. Botox should not be on the table because, while not worsening the appearance of scarring, will certainly not make them look any better. Schedule an appointment with a cosmetic surgeon and speak to them about your true options.
