Main Differences Between Male And Female Breast Reduction

Breast reduction surgery is done to remove excess skin and breast tissue from the chest to alter the size and weight of the breasts. This procedure can be done to men and women; however, there are differences in how the surgery is performed, the reasons for the procedure and the results.

Main Differences Between Male And Female Breast Reduction

Gynecomastia

Gynecomastia is a medical condition affecting men that causes breast tissue to grow more than it should. This leads to the growth of breasts that are large and soft, not unlike those that women have. This condition may not be harmful, but it can be displeasing to the eye and cause major issues with confidence and self-esteem. Many men who are plagued by gynecomastia hide their breasts under baggy clothes and may avoid going to places where they would need to be topless like a swimming pool or in an intimate situation with a partner. To fix this problem, many men seek breast reduction surgery.

Surgery Function

The function of breast reduction surgery in women is to alleviate back pain, create more proportionally-sized breasts and better contours in the chest. For men, breast reduction serves an entirely different function. Breasts play a role in a female’s anatomy, but they do not in male’s. The function of a male breast reduction surgery is to remove the breasts entirely. A man undergoing breast reduction surgery wants to have a flat, male-looking chest free of breasts. This is in contrast to women who simply want to reduce the volume of their breasts and lift them to a more appealing position.

The Process

For men undergoing breast reduction surgery, the incision pattern differs from women who are having the same procedure. Because the goal of male breast reduction is to remove the breast tissue completely, the tissue removal process and incision patterns are not the same as when a woman has the surgery. Male breast reduction surgery leaves little scarring due to the way the incisions are made whereas women who have the same surgery will see more visible scarring. Also, the male breast is more fibrous and thicker than that of a female. Women’s breasts are mostly made up of fat so they can be removed through excision and liposuction, while men’s breasts require surgical excision.

Results

Another major difference between male and female breast reduction surgeries are the results. The result of a female breast reduction procedure is to reduce the volume of the breast while preserving the shape. Conversely, the result of a male breast reduction surgery is to make the chest completely flat and remove all traces of breast tissue.
