Do Patients Ever Experience Vision Problems After Eyelid Surgery?

Eyelid surgery, or an eyelid lift, known medically as blepharoplasty, is a procedure wherein a cosmetic surgeon removes skin and fatty tissue from above, or below the eyes to make your eyes look more youthful. It is able to correct wrinkles, reduce puffy bags, and tighten heavy lids, working to open and rejuvenate your eyes.

Vision Problems After Eyelid Surgery

Patients don’t typically experience vision impairments after eyelid surgery but swelling around the eye can sometimes cause temporary problems that go away after a few weeks. These problems include dry eye and blurry vision. The length of the impairments, however, generally depends on what kind of surgery you have had.

If you have had excess skin removed from the top of your eyelid, and therefore have complete closure of the eye, the blurry vision and dry eyes may last a bit longer. Most cosmetic surgeons will tell you that these symptoms should last for approximately one month after the procedure has been completed. If you are feeling at all nervous about any symptoms you might be experiencing, speak to your surgeon immediately and they can schedule you an additional consultation or checkup.

Many people have, however, complained about dry eyes persisting for years after the surgery, which affects their ability to wear contact lenses. While not a vision problem per se, if you rely on contact lenses to see, you may have to incorporate regular lubrication into your eye care routine.

The causes of blurry vision after the surgery include:

  1. Swelling of the eyelids, causing a temporary distortion of the cornea, which, in the vast majority of cases, resolves itself on its own.
  2. Dryness which can also cause swelling of the eyelids and distortion of the cornea.
  3. Too much lubrication.

While the surgery itself generally does not cause vision problems that persist for any longer than it takes for the eye to fully heal, during this time you will need to take especially good care of your eyes to ensure that you do not cause further damage due to negligence.

Eyelid surgery is very popular, and the overwhelming majority of people who undergo it find it incredibly helpful, and the minor annoyances that comes along with it very bearable. Always consult with your surgeon, or an eye specialist if you feel like you are experiencing abnormal vision issues and make sure to follow the recovery procedure to a tee and you will avoid extended vision problems post surgery.
