Will I Stop Sweating Completely After Excessive Sweating Treatments?

Excessive sweating is common and can be very embarrassing for the individual who suffers from this ailment. Also known as hyperhidrosis, heavy sweating is treatable and you’ll no longer have to feel the need to hide away when the problem arises.

Excessive Sweating Treatments

Once you have been diagnosed with excessive sweating, there are a few treatments available. Some will leave you sweatless, while others greatly reduce your chances of sweating.

For most, these are the most common treatments of sweating:

  • Surgery
  • Your sweat glands are surgically removed from the underarms. The area treated will be numbed but you will remain awake during the procedure.

Without sweat glands, you will no longer sweat. Although this surgery is routine and typically not dangerous, all surgical procedures come with risks. These will be discussed with you during your initial consultation.

  • Iontophoresis
  • You will sit with your hands and feet in a shallow tray of water for about 20 minutes while an electrical current travels through the water, blocking sweat from moving to your skin’s surface.

Some people only require a few treatments monthly while others require more upkeep. This treatment does not stop you from sweating entirely but it does greatly reduce the amount you perspire.

  • Injections
  • A weak form of botulinum toxin, or Botox, is injected into your underarms. This toxin temporarily blocks a chemical in the body that stimulates your sweat glands. These injections are nearly painless and most patients notice results within four days of receiving treatment.

Botulinum can reduce sweating for 4-6 months. You can be re-treated as soon as your excessive sweating returns.

  • Anticholinergic drugs
  • These are prescription medications that work to stop the activation of sweat glands. These drugs are taken orally and like many prescription drugs, have common side effects. However, everyone is different and not all who take these medications will suffer from the various side effects.

These drugs will not stop you from sweating altogether, but you will notice that after a while you barely perspire at all.

Depending on how your body reacts to certain treatments, doctors can determine if you will stop perspiring completely or only experience reduced sweating. Nevertheless, less sweating is almost always experienced.
