5 Habits That Accelerate The Signs Of Aging

Aging happens to all of us, and there are certain habits that accelerate the process. Many of us do these things daily, which is akin to giving our bodies the go-ahead to speed up the aging process. Although it is impossible to go back in time, you can reverse the signs of aging by getting rid of the following five habits.

Habits That Accelerate The Signs Of Aging

  1. Not Butting Out

Everyone knows that smoking causes cancer, but it also damages our skin. It is a bad habit, and if you do it, whether it’s having the occasional cigarette once a week or a pack a day, you should quit. Smoking damages the essential proteins our skin needs to remain firm and tight. Furthermore, prolonged tobacco use causes fine lines and wrinkles, and reduces blood flow, so your body can’t get enough nutrients and oxygen.

  2. Forgetting the Sunscreen

Sun exposure creates wrinkles. Even in the winter when it’s grey outside, the sun’s harmful rays will peak through the clouds long enough to damage our skin. Sunscreen is a must at all times of the year. When you do not apply sunscreen to exposed skin (the face) before leaving the house, you are putting yourself at risk for cancer. Plus, the sun weakens our skin cells, making us more prone to bruising.

  3. Overindulging

Most Canadians’ daily sugar consumption is more than 10% of their total daily calories. Besides weight gain, excessive sugar consumption leads to collagen and elastin loss, which produces wrinkles and dry, sagging skin. If you cannot cut sugar out of your diet completely, ensure that you are not eating more than the recommended 10% of your daily caloric intake.

  4. Worrying About Everything

Stress ages us, and unfortunately, our bodies have trouble handling stressful situations as we get older. When we are stressed out we wear it on our faces. It may be impossible to live a stress-free life, but if you can take time at least twice a week to relax, you will actually look younger. You can try getting a massage, taking a yoga class, or simply turning off your phone for whatever amount of time you can handle and reading a book. Exercise is also a great way to keep stress at bay, and the fitter you are, the younger you’ll look.

  5. Neglecting Your Skin

Without a regular skin care routine in place, you are going to look older than you actually are. Try medical grade skin care products that nourish and revitalize the skin, especially around the eyes. Look for products that contain retin (a type of vitamin A), hyaluronic acid, vitamin C and antioxidants. Each will protect your skin from pollution and restore the production of collagen to slow down the aging process.
