Breast Reduction

Condition: Mammary Hypertrophy is the term used to describe large breasts. This condition is usually either genetically or hormonally produced or a result of weight gain, since breasts are comprised of glandular tissue and fat. When breasts are undesirably large, they may be made smaller through reduction mammaplasty, or breast reduction. Women seeking reduction are often motivated by difficulty fitting clothing and bras, psychological issues brought about by coping with large breasts, or symptoms such as back, shoulder and neck pain or recurring rashes.

Procedure: Breast reduction is routinely performed at the McLean Clinic. Dr. McLean prefers to use the modern technique of "vertical reduction" wherever possible. This is the procedure that results in a "lollipop" scar rather than an "anchor" one. Obvious and permanent scarring is a normal result of breast reduction. Scars from the vertical technique tend to be more favourable and therefore more desirable. The technique may also produce a more favourable shape and lifting effect.

Consequences: It is important for women having breast reduction to know that they will have significant scars, possible permanent loss of sensation in the nipple or breast and inability to breast feed. Cancer risk is not affected by breast reduction.

Risks: As with all surgery there are risks of infection, fluid collection, bleeding, numbness, poor healing, and undesirable scars. Since it is a bilateral procedure, asymmetry may occur involving, for example, shape or size.

McLean Clinic Breast Reduction: Typically the procedure is performed under general anaesthetic (you are asleep) as day surgery (no hospital stay), and takes 2 hours or less. Drains or tubes are not used, and you go home in one of your old bras to secure the dressings. A responsible adult must take you home and be with you for the next 24 hours. You may be out of bed if you wish, shower the next day or as soon as the dressings have been removed, and eat what you like. If you take pain killers regularly for the first two days, pain is often not a problem.

Breast reduction is one of the most gratifying procedures for patients and for our staff who see the smiles that result.
