Excessive-Sweating Treatment

Excessive-Sweating Treatment

What Is Excessive Sweating?

Excessive sweating, also referred to as hyperhidrosis refers to abnormally increased sweating and/or perspiration. Although the condition can be generalized, it often affects localized areas of the body, such as the hands, feet or underarms. Hyperhidrosis can affect both genders equally. Although individuals can begin suffering from it at any age, it usually manifests at the time of puberty.

What Causes Excessive Sweating?

Excessive sweating is the result of overactive sweat glands. This usually indicates a problem with the body’s sympathetic nervous system. The condition can occur as a result of the following:

  • Genetics – hyperhidrosis is often an inherited ailment
  • Underlying medical condition
  • Nervousness or excitement
  • Certain foods and beverages
  • Medications

Can Excessive Sweating Be Treated?

Hyperhidrosis can be embarrassing for those who suffer from it. If left untreated, it can have real social and emotional consequences. The good news is that there is help out there. Effective treatments include and are not limited to:

  • This is the ideal 3-in-1 treatment for underarms that permanently reduces sweat, odor and hair after only 1 treatment.
  • Topical antiperspirants and solutions containing aluminum chloride hexaydrate, such as Drysol
  • Oral medications such as beta-blockers
  • Surgical procedures to remove sweat glands and interrupt nerve paths
  • Injections of botulinum toxin A (Botox) used to prevent the release of chemicals that signal the activation of sweat glands

Many private health insurance plans cover the cost of treatment for hyperhidrosis.
