What’s The Difference Between Upper And Lower Blepharoplasty?
Blepharoplasty, otherwise known as eyelid surgery, is a cosmetic procedure in which excess fat, skin and tissue is removed from the upper or lower eyelids to create a more alert and youthful appearance. Eyelid surgery can be done on the lower and upper lids, depending on the issues the patient wants to address. There are two main differences between upper and lower blepharoplasty: the area being treated and the placement of the incisions. For upper blepharoplasty, the incision will be made along the natural fold of the eyelid. For lower blepharoplasty, the incision is made along the lash line or inside the lower eyelid.
What happens during upper eyelid surgery?
Upper blepharoplasty corrects a drooping eyelid. This is also known as hooding because the skin droops so much that it looks like there is a hood over the eyelid. Additionally, upper blepharoplasty targets puffiness in the lids and can address wrinkles and lines in the areas as well. When the incision is made along the natural fold of the eyelid, your surgeon will remove excess skin and tissue and tighten the muscles around the eye. Pockets of fat may also be excised before the skin is redraped over the new contours. Finally, the incision is closed with a tiny suture. The incisions are so tiny that they will not be visible.
What happens during lower eyelid surgery?
Lower blepharoplasty is done to correct puffiness under the eyes. This puffiness is also referred to as under-eye bags and is caused by excess skin and tissue in the area. In severe cases, the lower lids droop so much that the white part of the eye under the iris becomes visible. During this procedure an incision is made inside the lower lid or inside the lash line. Your surgeon will then remove excess skin and tissue and tighten the muscles before suturing the incision. As with upper blepharoplasty, the incisions are so tiny that they are practically invisible.
What procedure should you choose?
During your initial blepharoplasty consultation, your surgeon will determine the best course of action for you. If you have excess skin on the upper portion of the eyelid (hooding) then you will probably benefit from upper blepharoplasty. On the contrary, if you have excess skin under the eyes, creating a baggy effect, then lower blepharoplasty is the right choice.
Whether you have lower or upper blepharoplasty done, you will notice reduced puffiness around your eyes. You will also appear more alert and youthful and enjoy greater self-confidence. Furthermore, if you have hooding around the upper eyelid that is obstructing your sight, blepharoplasty surgery will correct this issue, restoring your vision.
