The Best Time Of Year For Laser Hair Removal

If you’re thinking of visiting a laser hair removal clinic, you may be wondering when you should make your appointment. Unlike waxing or shaving there is actually a time of year where laser hair removal is the most effective. So, before you book that appointment, look at the calendar and pick a cold day.

The Best Time Of Year For Laser Hair Removal

What time of year is best for laser hair removal?

Winter is the best time to start your laser hair removal treatments. However, that doesn’t mean you have to wait until the temperature dips below freezing. As soon as your tan fades you can start the process. Because laser hair removal is based on skin tone, you need to have an even surface free of tanlines. If you’re someone who visits tanning salons or uses at-home tanning products, wait until after your laser hair removal treatments are over.

How does laser hair removal work?

When our hair grows, a concentration of melanin forms within the hair’s follicles. Melanin is a dark brown to black pigment that naturally occurs in our skin and the irises of our eyes. This pigment actually occurs in all mammals, not just humans. Because of melanin, our exposed skin is able to absorb sunlight, which causes us to tan or burn. Melanin is also able to absorb the light of the laser during the hair removal process. When the technician at the laser hair removal clinic applies the laser to your skin, the hair follicles absorb the light, heat up, and then die.

How many treatments are needed?

Laser hair removal requires about four treatments because only 20 per cent of our follicles are in their growth phase at once. Your follicles need enough melanin to be able to absorb the laser’s light, which is why multiple treatments are needed. Each treatment is performed a few weeks apart. Furthermore, laser hair removal works more effectively on people with dark hair and light skin. However, that does not mean if you have blonde hair and dark skin that the treatment won’t work for you. It may require more sessions than those with darker hair and lighter skin.

Is this treatment permanent?

Laser hair removal isn’t completely permanent but most of the follicles are unable to produce hair after undergoing this treatment. You may notice a few hairs popping up in the years following your treatment, but unlike waxing or shaving, the hair mostly does not grow back.

If you haven’t booked your appointment with a laser hair removal clinic, don’t wait until bathing suit season, do it now.
