How Long Do Lip Injections Last?

Anyone who covets plumper, fuller lips may be an ideal candidate for lip injections. This is a cosmetic procedure that can restore the volume and shape of the lips, which get lost over time. Generally, lip injections consist of injectable dermal fillers that increase the volume of the lips.

How Long Do Lip Injections Last

Lip injections can last anywhere from 6 to 12 months. The type you get (Restylane, collagen, fat, Juvederm lip injections, etc.) will determine how long yours will last.

Type of lip augmentation fillers:

  1. Collagen: Collagen is a naturally occurring substance in humans and animals. These type of fillers use either human or bovine collagen to plump the lips. Collagen fillers extracted from cows usually last longer than those taken from humans. Cow collagen lasts anywhere from 6 to 12 months, while human collagen lasts only three months. But there is a chance of developing an allergic reaction to bovine fillers.
  2. Hyaluronic acid fillers: These are the most popular type of lip injections. Restylane and Juvederm lip injections are two of the more well-known brands of hyaluronic acid fillers. Hyaluronic acid, like collagen, is a naturally occurring substance in the body. Juvederm lip injections and other hyaluronic acid fillers tend to last approximately 6 months. The acid is then reabsorbed by the body without causing you any harm. You can have a touch-up immediately with no consequences.
  3. Fat: These lip injections are made with your own fat. The fat is taken from other areas of the body via liposuction, then purified before being injected into the lips. Fat injections last longer than other injectables, but it is a very involved procedure, unlike Juvederm lip injections, which can be done within minutes.
  4. Autologen: In the same vein as collagen or hyaluronic acid fillers, these injectables contain the patient’s own materials. The filler is extracted from your skin and can last anywhere from 6 to 12 months.
  5. Silicone: Technically, silicone is not an injectible; it’s an implant. As with other cosmetic procedures, silicone is used to create volume and enhance the part of the body it is placed in. Silicone lip implants are permanent; however, they come with more risks than lip injections. The implant can move or make knot-like bumps around the lips.
