Can I Have a Baby After I Have a Tummy Tuck?

Have a Tummy Tuck

Perhaps one of the greatest joys for any family is the arrival of a newborn.  But one of the most common questions women have for cosmetic surgeons is whether they can have a baby after receiving a tummy tuck.  For years, women have been concerned that a tummy tuck would tighten the abdomen – causing discomfort for the baby inside.  Or they were worried that the procedure would somehow prevent them from conceiving a child in the first place.

But the good news is that you can certainly have a baby after a tummy tuck operation.  Doctors say there are thousands of babies conceived by women who have had abdominoplasty.  These women tend to carry the baby a little higher in the abdomen, but there is never any harm to the baby during the nine month pregnancy period.  Although sometimes it is hard to plan conception, most surgeons advise women to conceive after the tummy tuck has been performed and the wounds have healed.

The actual surgery involves removing excess fat and skin from the lower and middle abdomen.  The doctor tightens the muscle of the abdominal wall, making the stomach look much flatter.  Recovery time is anywhere from two to six weeks, depending on the complexity of your procedure.

Once the recovery time has passed, it is absolutely safe to have a baby.  After all, this is one of the greatest gifts of life and should not be hindered by the rightful choice to have cosmetic surgery.  But keep in mind you may have to undergo a second tummy tuck afterwards.  This is because the skin and muscles may have stretched greatly during pregnancy.
