Your Tummy Tuck Handbook

Now that we’re well into the winter months here in the GTA, now is the better time than ever to begin prepping your body to look its absolute best once summer rolls around. Here at McLean Clinic, we offer a wide variety of cosmetic surgeries to help patients of all shapes and sizes achieve their goals, whatever they may be. In particular, our Tummy Tuck procedure is one of Dr. McLean’s specialties!

Before Your Tummy Tuck

Your tummy tuck journey will begin with a one-on-one consultation with Dr. McLean himself and during this meeting, he will gain a better understanding of what you would like to achieve post-surgery and discuss your desired results and outcomes. You can also expect to have an examination of your abdominal area so that an assessment can be made about the condition of your skin. Rest assured that this process will take place in the comfort and privacy of the McLean Clinic office in Mississauga, Ontario.

This consultation will also allow you to ask as many questions as you need so you can clarify any questions you may have as well as learn everything you need to know about the tummy tuck procedure. You can rest assured that the consultation will allow you to feel informed and prepared for the surgery. The consultation will also allow you to see before and after photos of previous patients who have had the tummy tuck surgery performed and give you a chance to review what your results could look like. Furthermore, you will learn about the recovery process, what you can expect in terms of pricing, and when you will see your final results.

During Your Tummy Tuck

You can rest assured that the tummy tuck procedure itself is pain-free and relatively quick. At McLean Clinic, tummy tucks are an outpatient procedure using general anesthesia. Dr. McLean will make an incision horizontally in the lower abdomen area from hip bone to hip bone, following the bikini line. This means that it will be easy to hide underneath bathing suits and clothing.

The next step involves the tightening of the abdomen wall with the use of sutures that will be inserted deep within the muscle, which will help reinforce it. Then, excess skin and fat will be removed, improving the contour of your stomach for a flatter and firmer appearance.

Because pain is subjective, it is difficult to determine how painful this surgery will be for you as it will vary from patient to patient. However, many patients reveal that they experience only slight discomfort afterwards, and pain medication will also be prescribed to you to help alleviate discomfort and pain.

After Your Tummy Tuck

After your tummy tuck surgery, it is normal to feel sore and to notice swelling and bruising for a few days. The most important thing to do during the first few days following your procedure is to make sure you rest. You may shower the following day but you will need to avoid exercise or strenuous activity for a few weeks until your healing process is further underway. Dr. McLean will inform you when you will be able to return to work and your regular day to day activities.

In order to ensure you heal accurately and within a timely manner, you must follow the instructions provided to you by the McLean Clinic team very carefully. After your surgery, you should have someone close help you around, as your main priority should be to rest.

As with any kind of plastic surgery, there is always the possibility of associated complications, risks, and side effects. However, these risks and side effects are much less likely to occur when a highly skilled and experienced surgeon, like Dr. McLean, performs the operation.

The most common risks and side effects associated with a tummy tuck often include the following:

  • Scarring
  • Abnormal Bruising
  • Bleeding
  • Numbness
  • Infection

At McLean Clinic, we will be carefully monitoring your progress after your surgery through regular follow up appointments and check-ups to ensure your recovery process is on track.

You will almost immediately notice a dramatic difference in the size and firmness of your new abdominal region. In most cases, McLean Clinic tummy tucks will not require any drains or tubes! We also use dissolving stitches so that they don’t need to be removed, making for a smooth and simple recovery process. You may be required to wear a compression garment, which will play a role in minimizing post-op swelling and bruising.

Generally, you will need at least two weeks of recovery and can usually return to work after this initial recovery period. Exercise and more strenuous exercise should be avoided for 6 weeks after your procedure. We will provide you with dressings and show you an easy way for how to use them.

Once your recovery is complete, you will be ready to hit the pool once the warmer weather begins rolling around! If you maintain a healthy lifestyle by being mindful of your diet and exercise, your tummy tuck results can be permanent and very long-lasting. In fact, many of our patients find even more motivation post-tummy-tuck to maintain a healthy, active lifestyle!

If you are hoping to improve the shape and appearance of your abdominal area, you can rest assured that McLean Clinic is here to help! Book your free consultation today to speak with a member of the McLean Clinic team so that we can help you get started on achieving your goals.
