Dysport works by reducing the amount of muscle activity responsible for creating moderate to severe frown lines and wrinkles between the eyebrows. Wrinkles can develop in younger adults before the age of 30 since they are the result of repeated muscle movement and muscle contractions. Injections into the area between and above the eyebrows will work to temporarily reduce muscle contractions that can cause frown lines, leaving the rest of your face unaffected and free to move naturally.
If you are planning a Dysport treatment session, we recommend avoiding anti-inflammatory medication such as Aspirin for at least 2 weeks before and after your treatment, as this may increase your chance for bruising following your session.

Dysport injections will work to temporarily reduce the appearance of frown lines between the eyebrows, creating a natural looking result that allows you to move the rest of your facial features normally. The injections contain a substance that works to block the signal sent from the nerves to the facial muscles, which will reduce muscle activity and in turn, reduce the appearance of frown lines. Dysport injectables usually take between 10 to 20 minutes to complete, and your results can last up to 4 months depending on how quickly your body metabolizes the substance.
Similar to its Botox counterpart, Dysport injections are made from the same neurotoxin– botulinum toxin type A. Both products contain slightly different variations of the same neuromodulator but have slightly different characteristics. Dysport injections tend to take effect a few days sooner than Botox injections, and the former will also diffuse more than Botox will. This means that Dysport is incredibly effective in areas such as crow’s feet or in the neck.
Results from Dysport injections are almost immediate, and the majority of patients see visible improvement within 2 to 3 days after their first session. You will be able to return to your normal activities right away as this treatment is non-invasive and does not require incisions or long recovery times. After a single 10 to 20 minute session involving Dysport injections, you will notice softer frown lines between your eyebrows for up to 4 months. To maintain optimal results, we recommend following up with your injections after this period of time.
Once your Dysport session is complete, you will be able to return to your normal day-to-day activities, although we do recommend avoiding strenuous activity for the first 24 hours. This will help avoid bruising. You may apply ice to the injection site to minimize redness and swelling. This is completely normal and usually resolves on its own after the first couple of days.
When Dysport injections are administered by skilled, trained, and experienced injectors like those at McLean Clinic, potential complications and side effects are rare– especially if you follow our post-treatment guidelines. You may experience slight redness and bruising and the injection site, although this should resolve on its own within a few days.
Dysport is relatively new in North America, seeing as though it was developed in the United Kingdom back in the 1990s. Because of this, there are some misconceptions about Dysport that patients should be aware of. The first misconception is that Dysport is identical to Botox. In reality, Dysport is considered a milder treatment than Botox is. While they are both made from botulinum Type A, there is a much lower concentration in Dysport to immobilize the muscles responsible for creating lines and wrinkles. Dysport is approximately ⅓ as potent as Botox is, and is frequently recommended as a Botox alternative, especially if a patient has built up considerable immunity to Botox injections.
