Platelet Rich Plasma
What it is
Platelet rich plasma, known as a “Vampire Facial”, is a revolutionary treatment that uses the natural healing system of the human body to produce anti-aging benefits. Platelet Rich Plasma is produced from your blood and combined with a filler for injection into areas of treatment. The procedure will enhance and revitalize the skin, resulting in a radiant and youthful appearance with the increased production of collagen.
Platelet Rich Plasma can be injected into many treatment areas, such as areas of the face that show signs of aging. It can be used to restore volume in the cheeks, fill in smile lines that form in the nasal labial area, and soften the hollows underneath the eyes.
Along with cosmetic purposes, Platelet rich plasma injections have been re-purposed for medical use due to its ability to promote healing and growth. It can also be used to treat:
- Hair loss: The injection of platelet rich plasma into the scalp has been proven to promote hair growth and prevent hair loss, especially in male pattern baldness (androgenic alopecia).
- Injuries to the tendons: Tendons are thick strands of tissue that connects your muscles to your bones. After injury, tendons are usually slow to heal. Platelet rich plasma injections have been used to expedite the healing process for individuals who suffer from tennis elbow, jumper’s knee, or Achilles tendonitis at the ankle.
How to Prepare
Prior to your treatment, a small blood sample will be taken and then immediately placed into a centrifuge. This machine will separate the blood components by spinning around rapidly, which is a process that takes about 15 minutes. The separated plasma will then be prepared for injection into the treatment site, which will occur in the deep dermis layers as a way to promote collagen production. This will result in the increased overall health of the skin on a long-term basis.
How It Works
Platelets are beneficial for skin healing and anti-aging benefits because it releases growth factors that boosts cell regeneration and produces stem cells. This helps repair any damaged tissue quickly and effectively, which is beneficial for patients who seek to reverse the signs of aging and photodamage. Over time, the increased production of collagen will increase the skin’s overall thickness and health for long-term, long-lasting results. The procedure as a whole should take approximately one hour.
The Platelet Rich Plasma procedure produces similar results to, and can be an alternative to dermal fillers. When the blood is centrifuged and the platelet rich plasma is separated, a gel-serum is created, which is then injected into treatment areas where wrinkles, lines, and sagging has appeared. Platelet rich plasma boosts the natural production of collagen in the skin because it stimulates 3-5x as many stem cells found in normal blood. This makes it effective for restoring a youthful complexion and reduces the appearance of aging.
This procedure can be combined with laser resurfacing or skin tightening procedures to maximize its effectiveness. It can also be paired with hyaluronic acid based fillers, such as Juvederm, for a complete, yet natural looking makeover.
Because the Platelet rich plasma procedure stimulates the production of collagen in the skin, full results will gradually become more noticeable over a period of 6 weeks depending on your lifestyle habits as well as the condition of your skin. If your skin is mature, you may require more than one treatment.

Myths and Facts
While many people may believe that platelet rich plasma treatments are only for older patients, this is definitely not the case! Prevention is key because the skin and muscles on our face weaken as we age. Platelet rich plasma injections can delay this aging process, making it suitable for younger and older patients alike.
