Dr. Hugh McLean is one of the world’s leading plastic surgeons specializing in top surgery both for FTM and MTF.
For transwomen or non-binary transgender individuals who would like to achieve a feminine looking appearance, a MTF breast augmentation is a solution. This surgical procedure will enhance the shape and size of your chest with the addition of saline or silicone implants. This surgical procedure is aimed to help you feel greater levels of comfort with your body by better aligning your internal sense of self with yoursaline or silicone implants physical characteristics and the self that you present to others around you. For many patients, this procedure often enhances self-esteem and heightens your body confidence.
Individuals who are considering, or currently in the process of gender transition, are likely to have heard the term “breast augmentation” in the past. A breast augmentation surgical procedure is a cosmetic surgery that uses silicone or saline breast implants to enhance and feminize the shape and size of your chest.
The majority of transfeminine individuals who start hormone therapy often find positive changes to their body, but many still yearn for larger breasts. The addition of implants behind each breast will help enhance your gender expression by increasing the size of your breasts.
A MTF Breast Augmentation procedure can be performed at any stage of your transition. Whether it be your first step or only step, the procedure can complement other physical or social changes you may have made or in the process of doing.
When coping with the idea of permanent change, it is normal to experience some hesitation or fear. At McLean Clinic, we’re dedicated to ensuring you receive in-depth information about the procedure and what to expect, as well as what surgical techniques are available, what the recovery process will be like, and results so that you can make the best, most informed decision for yourself and your body. The process starts with a private consultation with Dr. McLean in the comfort of his Mississauga clinic, where time and care will be taken to address each and every one of your questions to put your mind at ease.
While a MFT breast augmentation surgery can most definitely enhance your body confidence and your self-esteem, it is crucial to maintain realistic expectations throughout the process. With nearly every surgical procedure, there are trade-offs and potential complications along the way.
Because all patients are unique in regards to their surgical experience, it is not always possible to predict how your final results will look and feel. You may also undergo additional surgeries to help you better achieve a more feminine looking chest and body, such as liposuction. These options will be discussed with you in the comfort and privacy of the McLean Clinic office in Mississauga.
For the most part, many of the techniques utilized during a MTF breast augmentation are similar to that of a traditional breast augmentation. Many patients are often concerned about whether or not they have enough skin that is proportionate to their desired size of implant. For most, your skin will naturally stretch over time to cover your implants as long as the size of your implants complement your natural frame and anatomy.
Your MTF breast augmentation is an outpatient procedure, meaning you will be able to return to the comfort of your home on the same day as surgery. The operation is usually complete in 1-1.5 hours and is performed under general anesthesia. Once this has set in, the appropriate incision will be made for the insertion of your implants. Incision locations include:
This incision will create a pocket either in front of or behind your chest muscle, which then an implant will be placed within the breast tissue. Adhesives, sutures, or surgical tape will secure the incisions and your chest will be wrapped in dressings or a surgical bra.
Once your surgery is complete, you will have transported into a recovery area where you will be monitored for a few hours.
The results from your MTF breast augmentation surgery are immediately noticeable and your results should continue to improve and evolve over the next few months as the swelling resolves. Your final bra size can usually be determined after 4 to 8 weeks post-operation.
The McLean Clinic team is dedicated to ensuring your recovery process is as smooth and speedy as possible. Immediately after surgery, it is normal to feel disoriented or groggy when you wake up. Many patients also experience some swelling and bruising, which will gradually decrease over the course of several weeks.
A MTF breast augmentation is quite an invasive and significant surgical procedure, which will require you to rest and take time off from your normal, day to day activities. Though all of our patients have unique experiences, the majority are able to return to low-impact activities within 7 to 10 days and can resume strenuous activities after about 1-month post-operation.
Before you leave the recovery area at the McLean Clinic office in Mississauga, the McLean Clinic team will provide you with aftercare instructions and guidelines. It is important that you follow these instructions carefully to ensure your recovery process and your final results are optimal.

It is a frequent misconception that breast augmentations are very painful and require a significant amount of downtime and time off from work. Though our clients each have and will experience a unique situation, many are able to return to simple activities, including driving, within 7 to 10 days! You are also encouraged to participate in very light activities, such as walking, within 2 to 3 days to minimize swelling. Those who participate in strenuous exercise and heavy lifting are usually able to do this within 5 to 6 weeks.
