Achieve Your Dream Nose Shape With A Rhinoplasty In Mississauga

Rhinoplasty is one of the most common plastic surgery procedures, and can help reshape your nose and boost your self esteem.

What Is A Rhinoplasty?

Genetics can be our worst enemy when it comes to our noses. Noses come in a variety of shapes and sizes – they may appear too big, too small, crooked, or have unwanted bumps. If you are dissatisfied with the shape of your nose and want to improve its appearance, then you are likely a candidate for rhinoplasty.

Rhinoplasty, the remodelling and reshaping of the nose, is one of the most popular cosmetic procedures performed around the world and is also one of the most rewarding. The procedure is often extremely gratifying for both the patient and the surgeon. Patients who choose to undergo a rhinoplasty can range anywhere from late teens up to 60 years old due to the popularity of the procedure.

What Areas Can Be Treated With A Rhinoplasty?

The nose is one of the most prominent features on the face and can even be a defining characteristic of the facial complexion. While there is no upper age limit for having rhinoplasty, patients may be advised to wait until the nose is fully developed (about age 16) before undergoing rhinoplasty. With rhinoplasty, work is done on the cartilage and bone that provide the shape of your nose. Incisions are usually well hidden mostly inside your nose where they will not be visible. Your reshaped nose will allow you to feel more comfortable when looking in the mirror and boost your self-confidence.

All rhinoplasty procedures are unique because the needs of each patient vary greatly. Some of the most popular concerns that are corrected include:

  • Nasal tips that are bulbous, round, boxy, too large or small, or over projected
  • A bump on the bridge of the nose
  • Noses that are too large or small
  • Nostrils that are asymmetrical, or too narrow or wide
  • Functional defects that impact the ability to breathe properly, such as a deviated septum

Patients may also seek a change due to issues related to nasal functionality or difficulty with breathing, such as those with chronic nasal congestion. For many, enhancing the functionality of the nasal passages is a fairly straightforward procedure called a septoplasty, and usually requires only the straightening of the nasal septum and a turbinate reduction. This procedure can be performed concurrently to a rhinoplasty. These patients will not only experience an ease in breathing but will also get their external appearance polished and refined.

    How Does A Rhinoplasty Work?

Rhinoplasty can be performed comfortably and safely in the privacy of our Mississauga cosmetic clinic. You will be asleep for the entire procedure. You wake in the care of a kindly and expert nurse who assists you to prepare to go home.

The procedure begins by lifting the skin of the nose, which exposes the underlying bone and cartilage structure underneath. This structure will then be reshaped and refined to achieve the desired look and result. The soft tissue and skin will then be re-positioned over the nose’s new form.

Depending on your specific concerns, two surgical approaches can be utilized in order to achieve your desired result: the closed approach, in which all incisions are made inside the nose, or the open approach, which involve a tiny incision made between the nostrils across the skin. Open approaches are typically completed for patients who require more extensive changes to the nose

The McLean Clinic team has experience utilizing both approaches, and they are used according to the needs and desired end results of every patient.

What Results Can I Expect From A Rhinoplasty?

The end result of a rhinoplasty is a nose that is more proportionate and balanced to the rest of the facial complexion. The appearance of your nose will continue to improve gradually over the course of several months as you continue to heal and as the swelling continues to diminish. Though you’ll notice some improvements within the first week of recovery, your result will slightly change for up to 2 years post-op. Many patients find that adjustments to this one feature dramatically improves and harmonizes their facial balance and enhances their self-esteem.

You may want to enhance the benefits of a rhinoplasty by adding other facial procedures such as a brow lift or facelift. While surgery can improve the shape of your nose, it does not treat the quality of the skin. The McLean Clinic medical aesthetician can prescribe a program to improve skin health and appearance. This could involve such things as lasers or medical grade skin care. Our Lines & Wrinkles Treatment which includes fillers such as Juvederm can further enhance your results. Lines of the lips (so-called “smoker’s lines”) can be treated with fillers or resurfacing procedures.

For patients who seek a non-invasive alternative to a nose job, a non-surgical nose job with the use of dermal fillers may be a great option. This treatment can be used to temporarily alter the nose, smoothing out a bump or can add shape to the bridge. This option continues to improve in popularity and is completed in our office within 20 minutes. To learn more about the non-surgical nose job, please contact the McLean Clinic office located in Mississauga.

    Rhinoplasty Aftercare and Recovery

You will most likely be able to return to work within a week while more strenuous activity can be resumed a few weeks later. For the first week of recovery, you may experience bruising, swelling, and bleeding. Pain medication is prescribed and patients generally find the recovery tolerable.

The cast is usually removed 1 week after your surgery and swelling and bruising typically resolves on its own within 2 weeks. The final appearance of your nose may take 6 to 12 months to become fully realized.

    Potential Complications With A Rhinoplasty

Generally, nose surgery is a safe procedure but with any surgery, there are some potential complications that arise. This can include infection, excessive bleeding, or a reaction to anesthesia. These are rare, but the McLean Clinic team will provide a thorough review of the risk factors that are specific to you and your chosen procedure during your consultation. It is important to follow your post-operative guidelines to reduce the risk of complications.

    Rhinoplasty Myths and Facts

One myth that surrounds rhinoplasty is the idea that there is one ideal nose. In reality, the “ideal nose” can substantially vary as each patient is unique. At McLean Clinic, we strive to remodel a nose that balances with the rest of your surrounding facial features and creates harmony. For some, this may mean small and upturned while others will benefit from something larger or wider. For this reason, each rhinoplasty is customized and performed in a way that best suits the patient because we understand that there is no one ideal nose.
